Oh! I think that's the route I grew up hearing called "The Old McKenzie Highway." If we're talking about the same thing, I second it: it's an incredible trip! Slow, but very worth the time.
No, not the same. But the two are connected, sort of.
The Aufderheide is a Forest Service road. It has no state highway number. The north end of it connects to the McKenzie River Highway, also known as State Route 126.
Several miles further up the McKenzie from there is the Old McKenzie Highway aka SR 242. The Old McKenzie is a twisting, winding, gnarly road (but paved!) on which RVs, or anything towing a trailer, are not allowed.
It is only open in summers, usually opening on the July 4th weekend, and most years they have to plow it to get it open. Quite a drive, and worth it, but not the same road.
I’d love to drive it. When last drove it, we lived in Eugene, and regularly trekked from there to see family in Eastern Idaho. It’s been many years now that everyone left Oregon, so not too many reasons to go back. But, if I get lucky, I’ll find a way to check out that area.

Oh, now I see it! Thanks for clarifying that. I drove SR242 a couple times long ago, but I don't think I ever wandered Aufderdeide. Maybe someday....
If you've been on 242, you went past the Aufderheide. It's the road to the hippie hot springs. You keep going after going past the hot springs.
